Below are listed are some of what we work on in music class by grade level...
In K, 1st and 2nd grade:
Steady beat, music terms, beginning note reading, recognition of the staff and listening skills, song memory
In 3rd grade:
All of the above, plus learning to read notes on the treble clef staff, write an original piece of music from beginning to end
In 4th grade:
Continue reading the treble clef notes and work on increasing speed of reading the notes; learn to play recorder; learn basic rhythms using quarter note, quarter rest, eighth notes, half notes; learn how to read a fingering chart and listening skills; learn to play an instrument with others; learn Indiana's state song and Indiana music history; learn and memorize the Star-Spangled Banner
In 5th grade:
Continue reading the treble clef notes; learn bass clef notes; work on counting and clapping rhythms in music; sing and memorize longer songs together; learn the 50 states song; learn about voicing and work on projecting voices; learn and practice acting on stage; begin learning band instruments; playing instruments alone and together; continue honing listening skilss
In 6th grade:
Continue with improving instrument technique; learn 2/4, 3/4 meters; learn the Bb concert scale & the Chromatic scale; tuning; review quarter, eighth, and half notes; learn dotted rhythms; learn to play independent parts in an ensemble; be able to perform in a solo or small group setting; learn new terms such as crescendo, allegro and ritardando
In 7th & 8th grade:
Continue with improving instrument technique; review 2/4, 3/4; learn 6/8 and cut time meters; learn Eb scale, C scale, F scale, G scale, D scale, Ab scale; learn sixteenth notes and counting skills; improve solo and ensemble skills (independent playing); continue to learn music terms and use listening skills
