St. Michael's Catholic School, 1953

In 1953, a new building was built on the north side of the property, adjacent to the original building. Under the pastorate of Monsignor Adrian Brandehoff, the school was dedicated in 1954. The school continued to be administrated and staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. The school consisted of grades one through eight. With the decline of the availability of sisters, the first lay teacher, Mrs. Helen Shorter, was hired in 1956. In 1969, grades seven and eight were dropped and grade 6 was dropped the following year. In 1970, the Holy Cross community found it necessary to withdraw the four remaining sisters from the school. The parish decided to keep the school open for grades one through five, staffed with a lay principal and teachers. The enrollment for the 1970-1971 school year was 128 students. Kindergarten was added in 1976. The enrollment reached an all-time high of 186 in 1984-1985. Three and four year old Preschool was added in 1992.
